What makes a great portrait? Here are
some helpful hints:
- Catch lights in the eyes. These are the bright
white spots in the pupil of the eyes
- The lack of bright highlights in the skin tones.
The highlights come from the natural oils in the skin.
- Even skin tones. Even the best skin has
variations. A well done portrait will smooth out the skin tones.
- Your eye should be drawn to the subject. Your
eye may explore the surroundings of the setting, but your eye should be drawn
right back to the subject.
- Lighting can be soft or hard - it depends on the
effect being created. Here again, the lighting should enhance the
subject. Our eye is generally drawn to the brightest areas of the
image. Bright areas that pull your eye away from the subject defeat
the image.
