Photography: Cleveland and northeast Ohio.Is photography - ART or picture taking? There's an old adage - "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". So, when you look at a picture, how do you judge it? What criteria do you use to make that judgment? Let's say you're looking at a photo of a child. You knows it's a child because you were told the subject is a son, daughter, grandson or granddaughter. Maybe the child's face was a dark shadow. Maybe the child was barely recognizable because the camera was too far away. Maybe the head was cropped off across the forehead. The person viewing the photo exclaims Ohhh and Ahhh because the subject is a child, not because it's a great portrait. How do you judge good photography? Do you judge an image based on composition, lighting, exposure, proper focus or does it just look good? If you're not sure how to judge an image then read on. Frankly, read on any way. Digital technology has produced cameras with a wide array of features. Marketing hype says - Buy the newest camera and you can shoot images like those in National Geographic Magazine. The truth is we all can't have that distinction. If we could, National Geographic magazine would not be so special! Let's come back to the picture of the little child, the one that got the Ohhh's and Ahhh's. If we had an enlargement made of that image, framed it and hung it on the wall, would the image appear artistic and cause people to stop and Ohhh and Ahhh? Maybe or maybe not. Photographers understand artistic composition, color, light, and equipment. Yes, creating artistic images requires tools like a studio, a pleasing outdoor setting, props, studio lighting, cameras, lenses and backdrops. Not only is the equipment important and helpful, but knowing how to use it is imperative. Photographers spend tens of thousands of dollars on cameras, lenses, filters, lighting, computers, software and other equipment. Professionals also double their investment by purchasing backup equipment. A back up of every piece of equipment just in case something should break down during an assignment.
